There is an old joke I recall! One woman bought a computer and she calls up customer care and says that she is following instructions but can’t get her computer to start! On further querying by the customer support guy the woman says that she has inserted a clean and uninfected disk to start up the personal computer. She says that she also took the trouble of washing the disk using a disinfectant soap before inserting it into the computer!

Of course this might be going too far, in fact it is a joke that’s eons old in computer years! In all fairness and in keeping up with the times, let’s be gender neutral and say that this may have happened to a man as well!

The fact is that if you want to keep your personal computer in running shape it is not a funny business! It is dead serious because a PC is an investment not only when it comes to hardware nevertheless, you also stand to lose important computer data and files in case you don’t look after your personal computer.

Let’s go ahead and take the issue head-on and see what we have to do to maintain a PC

1. Consider buying a legal copy of an anti-virus anti-malware solution in case your PC doesn’t come pre-loaded with one. This can keep the PC running trouble free and make it less susceptible to crashing. It will also make your surfing experience much safer.

2. Defrag Often! Defragmenting your computer’s hard disk drive is something the equivalent of taking up files, papers, and stuff on your desk and keeping it neatly organized so that you can access it easily and quickly! Defragmenting your hard disk can help in increasing the computer’s performance. If you think your personal computer is sluggish over a period of time, then often defragging helps to increase speed.

3. Maintain your registry! The registry is a sort of meta-data about the programs and software installed on your computer. This may and does become corrupted on occasion. There are a number of third party tools that can help you to keep your window’s registry in perfect working condition. This is not a job for the faint hearted users so get acquainted with the registry and the type of tools which will help keep your registry free from bloating. If uncertain, ask a technician or an informed user.

4. Keep it clean! Maintain your PC inside a clean area that’s not prone to dust! This is particularly important in the case of a laptop. Not merely will your laptop feel better when you clean it regularly, you will also feel better when you use it!

5. Backup! Backup! Backup! In spite of everything that we do, accidents do happen and hard disks do crash! To be on the safe side keep a backup of all your files and save them on to a USB drive or a DVD/CD occasionally!

Following these basic rules will help make your computing experience safe and fun! Happy computing!

If you are thinking about getting a computer you might be considering used computers – tips when buying one. There are many reasons you might want to buy a used computer but money is probably at the top of the list.

You might be a student who needs a computer for class but you might not have a lot of cash to spend. Or you might be starting a new business. You need computers but you also need office furniture and other business start up items.

Let us face it, computers brand new out of the box are expensive. If you can save a thousand bucks on a used one then why not? You are not alone in this thinking. The used computer business is booming now that people are losing their jobs and have less money to spend. You do not want to make a financial mistake however. It would cost you more to have to replace a used computer with another one if you get a defective one when trying to save money.

For the sake of your bank account you want to choose carefully. You want to look at top brand models only when looking at the used computer selection. These brands have easy to find parts. Also they still might have a warranty in effect. If something goes bad on the model you might have to pay only a small processing fee to have the component replaced or you might have no cost at all.

These are computers that have been put back together in essence by the manufacturer. The computer has been checked and worn out components have been replaced. Some of these computers even have a limited warranty. These computers might be more expensive than a used computer but they are still cheaper in price than a new computer.

Ask the seller if the computer you are looking at is used or refurbished. Here are some practical items to consider. Make sure the computer boots up properly and all the software boots up quickly and correctly. Try out the mouse, especially on a laptop to see it is working properly. Check the monitor and the key board for correct typing.

Check the video, sound devices, and graphics to make sure they are in working order. You certainly want to obtain all of the related software documents and licenses when you buy a used computer. You do not want your computer to be used and stolen. With so many offering used computers for sale you can afford to choose one that will give you a few days to try out the computer to see if there is anything wrong with it.

Take the computer to someone you trust who knows about computers and let him check it out. A used computer may be the best bargain for you if you are careful when you buy it. But you do not want to make a bad choice and then have to spend money to replace it with a new computer. Oh and by the way take your computer friend out to lunch for his trouble for looking at your used computer.

Whether it’d be for business purposes or personal use, the need for projector rental Vancouver is growing. Used computers Toronto are also a popular choice; it’s functional and it’s inexpensive.

When you hear the word notebook, what do you think of? If you’re like most individuals today, your mind might go straight to the portable computer. This was not always the association. Notebooks used to pertain to paper bound by spiral coil or other method. They were for writing by hand.

When a child brings home his or her school supply list the first thing that is listed is a notebook. They are not talking about a portable desktop. They want the child to bring in something to journal in, more than likely.

The notebook as we know it today has gone through a few changes. They are no longer the primitive scratch pads they started out to be. Let’s look at their design in a little more detail.

The paper notebook used to be a primary merchandising machine. Children could find their Saturday morning cartoon favorites on them. You can even find that today. Disney takes advantage of this too!

Other types of designs include photography or other abstract designs. This helps budding artists get their work out to the masses, or offer fans of a certain photographer take their work anywhere.

There are different notebook styles. Many students like the kind that can hold more than one subject. The one subject notebook is still the most popular. If you look around the school supply or business area, you will also notice that they have evolved!

There are many other types out there. One of the newer trends is the note binder. These are alternately called hybrids by loyal users. The idea behind the note binder is to combine the ease of a notebook with the organization of a binder.

This style combines the ease of flexible binding of a notebook with the refillable ability of a binder. There are also folder pockets. This may call up memories of the biggest school supply fad of the eighties: The Trapper Keeper.

The Trapper Keeper is also making its own comeback. It has resurfaced looking more sophisticated than ever before. In the place of the Velcro they have placed snaps. That should make them a little more tolerable to teachers and bosses alike.

Consider this the next time you are looking around the stores for notebooks. They have gone through a few changes, but they are still the instant access supply you can depend on. They are easier to travel with, and do not require a plug. All you need is a writing utensil and several ideas to write down.

There has been somewhat of a revolution in laptop design over recent years; culminating in the arrival of netbooks. A lighter, cheaper and stripped down version of the traditional laptop, they have come a long way from their beginnings as an answer to providing developing countries with affordable computers.

Whilst an excellent project, (which has helped empower many of less fortunate and vulnerable than those in the western world), it has been throughout the recent recession that netbooks have really come into their own. Indeed, it is this form of computer that has been the one shining beacon in the industry really; as sales of home Personal Computers and traditional laptops have dropped off.

This has of course been hugely driven by the lower cost, with no real degradation in performance and use for most casual users. However, it is far more than price alone which has kept sales rising. They are also highly portable; being lightweight and much smaller of course; quite able to be carried around in a handbag or shoulder bag with ease.

They will not appeal to business users of course; not to any great degree anyway, but for the consumer, they are more than adequate for emailing and surfing the web. Other such basic functions such as simple spreadsheets, and word processing can also be managed perfectly well.

The technology has been possible because of the reduced size, and performance in components. Processors in particular have been slimmed down, whilst batteries too have been attended to. This does not really have negative effects however; as the lesser functionality requires less power in the first place.

Despite the small size however, nothing has been lost in the quality of screen; with most having touch screen functionality. The keyboards too are near full size; and there are a large number of ports for connectivity of all popular peripherals.

But there have been some downsides of course. These have tended to be based around the Operating System that was offered as standard. Though very good, the Linux OS was just not familiar to most users.

However, problems that existed with Windows OSs were soon overcome. The recently launched Windows Seven is set to be further developed; with a newly configured version of the platform being designed specifically. For the growing number of manufacturers of netbooks, it looks likely that they could well become the standard in the not too distant future.

by Nancy Walker

Perhaps your laptop battery is not lasting quite as long as it used to and you’re not quite sure what the problem is with your battery. There could be several causes as to why your battery isn’t lasting as long as it used to and holding a charge. Usage habit could be one of the reasons why your battery isn’t hold charge very long.

Physical devices on your laptop that you use, which requires using electricity, will also cause your battery run time to not last very long. The physical devices that are some of the problems with your battery’s charge to be depleted are the hard drive, CD-ROM and the floppy drive. There are probably some processes that you are using on your laptop that cause your physical memory to become exhausted in your system. The system will change to the virtual memory to finish the process you are in the middle of completing. The virtual memory is created to increase the system memory resources by devising a memory swap file on the hard drive and transferring the needed data between the hard drive and the physical memory.

The hard drive uses plenty of electricity, the virtual memory will end up using quite a bit of electricity because it has to use the hard drive when it is producing the virtual memory. The audio and display devices can be another factor in excessive use of electricity. You can try to turn down the display screen and it will not be as bright, but it may help lessen the amount of electricity you are using. There are video devices that use graphic programs that also use quite a bit of electricity as well. Video software can also deplete your battery because it uses the virtual memory, computation and calculations.

Battery memory is also a reason why your laptop battery is not lasting quite as long as it used to last. Battery memory is where the battery actually becomes self taught to run on less time than what it really needs to run on to be effective. An example of this is perhaps you only use the laptop on battery for an hour and plug it up to recharge, the battery will become adapted to be functional for only an hour before it is tired and ready to give up.

There are some things that need to be done in order to correct your battery memory problems. Start of by completely draining your battery and then recharge it. Your second step will be to go to your Window Control Panel and select power, then turn of your Power Management. Now you’re ready to go into your BIOS and check if there is a power management setting there, if there is, you will need to turn it off as well. Use your Escape key to return to the top level menu. Now select Save settings and then Exit. Unplug your computer, then turn the computer on again and let it run until it has completely used up all the electricity.

Once you have completed these steps, charge the battery for twelve hours. After charging for twelve hours, use the computer again until the power is dead and you will need to charge the battery again for twelve more hours. Repeat these steps four times and this should take care of the problem and return the computer back to its original power management settings. It is recommended that the battery should be used once every two weeks and you should also keep the battery in the system so that the AC adapter will keep the battery charged all the time and this helps the battery. In addition, if the battery is not going to be used for more than two weeks, you should completely discharge the battery and store it at room temperature to prevent damage.

Rugged laptop computers, also called ruggedized laptops, are made for portability, convenience, and extreme reliability in even the worst of conditions.

by William Jobe Cyrus

Rugged laptop computers, also called ruggedized laptops, are made for portability, convenience, and extreme reliability in even the worst of conditions. They’re capable of dealing with strong heat and cold, dust, moisture, vibration and other conditions where regular computers might give up.

These computers tend to be designed just for their jobs if they’re going to work well. There are models out there that have been adapted from regular consumer laptops, but they don’t have the same kind of engineering behind them, and can’t be really effective at dealing with harsh conditions. They’re also usually more expensive, heavier, and a little behind the current pace of technology, as well as being hard for the ordinary consumer to find.

There are a number of different design features that rugged laptop computers are likely to include. Not all computers will have all these features, and some machines are less rugged than others. These computers come in semi rugged and fully rugged styles, according to the use they’re likely to see.

Design features of rugged laptops include ports, connectors, keyboards and LCDs that are sealed to prevent liquid and dust instrusion, shock mounted hard disks that won’t be degraded by falls or continuous vibrations, and low power electronics that save battery life. Wireless communication of several different kinds is standard on these machines.

This type of computer usually has an extremely bright display that can be read in all kinds of lighting, from dark to in direct sunlight. Magnesium alloy cases and frames or magnesium alloy roll cages protect the contents of the computer, and passive cooling keeps components from overheating. The components themselves are also some of the toughest around.

Rugged laptops can be found in all kinds of sectors and situations, from medical emergency staff to police and fire department use. Military personnel make use of rugged laptops, as do utility companies and some companies, such as those in the mining, oil drilling, and construction fields. These laptops go anywhere hard use is expected.

There are some basic goals common among all rugged laptops. Controlled environments where electronic components can’t be damaged are desirable. However, they also include electronic parts capable of withstanding heat and cold, to keep damage from occurring.

There are lots of companies out there offering rugged laptop computers. Among them are General Dynamics, Panasonic, Twinhead and many others. The biggest demand for this kind of computer is from organizations and companies, so the majority of them are sold outside of the usual retail channels.

A rugged or ruggedized laptop is an excellent choice for any organization which needs performance and reliability, no matter what the conditions. Workers who can expect to deal with varying environments should use ruggedized computers instead of standard consumer models. These laptops are far more reliable and require service far less often than a regular laptop, making them a good bet for getting things done on time, every time.
